All about ballet companies including Joffrey and New York City Ballet
Ballet companies are found all over the world. They can consist of a small number of local amateur artists or a large group of professional dancers. Each group can have there own specific style in their movement as well as their own particular look or style of dancers. The director of the company will hold auditions to find the dancers needed to fit his or her preferences for the style he or she would like to create. For the professional career, each artist is employed on a contract basis. Each contract generally lasts for the season which usually is eight to ten months of the year. This partially depends on the budget they have to work with. Many groups travel to show other areas of the state, province or country to perform the repertoire they have worked on. This is called touring. Again how far each group will tour will depend on the budget they have to fund it as well as paying their artists. Some will travel across the world to countries such as China, Japan, Australia and Europe. The repertoire they perform may be classical pieces or new choreography created by their artistic directors or guest choreographers. Famous groups such as the Joffrey Ballet and the New York City Ballet are professional dancers each consisting of 46 and 90 performers respectively. With this high number, the New York City Ballet is considered the largest dance organisation in the United States. Both travel nationally and internationally to share their talents.
Like many ballet companies, the above two originate from colourful histories. The idea of the New York City Ballet first came to Lincoln Kirstein in 1933. From his passion for culture, Mr. Kirstein became a highly respected visionary for the arts community in the big apple. Beside the dance genius of George Balanchine, the two worked together since 1933 to eventually create this now famous troupe in 1948. The Joffery Ballet was established in 1956 and began as a small group of only six dancers. Led by Robert Joffrey as the artistic director with Gerald Arpino as the lead dancer, the two created a new innovative style of performing which later established itself in Chicago.
Both the New York City Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet have an extensive dance repertoire from countless famous choreographers and revived classical and contemporary works. Although the two are very different in various aspects of the art form, they both consist of great ballet talent that has the ability to awe any audience all over the world.
