About the Bolshoi Ballet
The BOLSHOI Ballet first emerged from its far away roots in Russia in 1773. It did not begin as a company but as an orphanage where this form of dance was taught. The instructor was a man named FILIPPO BECCARI. He produced many soloist and "corps" dancers in only a few years following its conception. After time, this orphanage became the center of dance talent in Russia to later develop a company the BOLSHOI Ballet.
After the revolution, the two dance schools of Russia, the BOLSHOI Ballet in Moscow and St. Petersburg, seemed to train using different techniques. The Communist government also began to mold the company from Moscow to be the premiere avenue for gifted dancers.
Today these two schools and companies continue to display precision and excellence in dance. The BOLSHOI Ballet performs out of the elaborate BOSHOI theatre seating about 2000 audience members. Touring internationally as well, the company dances the traditional favorites such as Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake, to new works from famous choreographers.
