The beautiful ballet tutu

A ballet tutu is a type of costume made for ballerinas dancing in classical or romantic ballets. There are two basic types of ballet tutu. A classical one is one where the skirt part of the dress extends out from the bodice and is stiff, whereas the romantic style has a soft skirt made of tulle, which extends to approximately above the ankle.

In the bodice of the ballet tutu different fabrics can be used. Traditionally, the bodice is made of woven fabrics with boning built in for support. These types of bodices are stiffer however, are more durable to sweat and the wear ability after various performances. It is important for the waist area of the bodice not to have any ornaments as the male partner could accidentally cut himself or catch on his costume while partnering. Stretch fabrics are also used which are comfortable but not often used for professional performances.

A ballet tutu must also be appropriate when considering the piece itself. This choice of costume must be compatible with the style of choreography, the lighting and manageable for the dancing performed.
