Basic principles of Ballet Technique

The basic principles of ballet technique are first taught in the formative years of dance training. Ballet technique refers to the method by which positions or steps are preformed and taught. Often dance school directors, who were dancers themselves, direct or teach in a way that creates a specific style.

There are many different methods of ballet technique around the world. For example, Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), CECCHETTI, and VAGONOVA methods are all training styles which are taught using a series of levels or grades. A syllabus is also used to guide dancers through the specific styles which eventually dancers can be examined on. Other examples include the Balanchine or Bournonville methods.

Regardless of the specific style a dancer is trained in, a theme that remains constant in any ballet technique is the precision of strength and grace. Although these two qualities appear contradictory, it is through discipline and the love for movement that help to enable dancers to achieve this level of performance.
